El buho, cuyo nombre en náhuatl es
Tecolotl, que se hispanizó como Tecolote, era considerado en Mesoamérica como
un ser que unía el inframundo con el mundo de los vivos, unía el arriba y
abajo, el cielo y la tierra, a los dioses y a los hombres, por lo mismo era
considerado como un ave mensajera de los malos presagios, las enfermedades y
las desgracias, convirtiéndolo en un ave previsor. Existe en México la creencia
de que “cuando el tecolote canta, el indio muere”, puesto que se creía que el
tecolote avisaba de la muerte de algún miembro de una familia cuando se
escuchaba su canto, cuando esto sucedía se injuriaba al ave y se rezaba, evitando
así la muerte, por lo que con el aviso, se podía “alargar” la vida y prevenir
enfermedades y desgracias. Si se paraba un tecolote en casa o cerca de la casa
se quemaba chile con sal para evitar cualquier desgracia de la que el ave
viniera a avisar.
Es un animal que acompaña a los
curanderos, chamanes y brujos, puesto que ellos deben estar en contacto
constante con la muerte y los dioses, saber lo que otros no y estar en contacto
con los espíritus y los augurios del futuro.
Así pues poseer un tecolote es
símbolo de chamanismo y conocimiento previsor de desgracias, con ello se puede evitar
cualquier mal acontecimiento e incluso la muerte.
The owl,
whose name in Nahuatl is Tecolotl, was considered in Mesoamerica as linking the
underworld whit the world of the living, joining the top and bottom, heaven and
earth, the gods and men, therefore was considered a messenger bird of ill
omens, disease and misfortune, turning it into an animal sighted. There in
Mexico the belief that “when the owl sings, the Indian dies”, since it was
believed that the owl warned of the death of a family member when they heard
her singing, to prevent death, the family insulted the bird and prayed avoiding
it, so they could “extend” their life and prevent illness and misfortune. If an
owl was kept at home or close to home, inside people used to burned chili with
salt to prevent any misfortune that the bird came to warn.
It is an
animal that accompanies healers, shamans and warlocks, as they must be in
constant contact with death and the gods, knowing what other don’t and be in
contact with spirits and omens of the future.
So having an
owl is a symbol of shamanism and foresight, give’s knowledge of misfortunes,
thus can avoid any bad event and even prevent death.
